Default Maintenance Day

So yesterday I rode out to coffee with my friend, then went and picked up new plugs. Had already ordered the fuel filter so after I got home and she cooled off I began tinkering. Sure as snot I tore one of the spark plug wires…….

Off to Harley I went. Got a set of 10mm wires and a license plate relocation mount. New wires and plugs, then pulled the fuel pump out of the tank to replace the filter. Don’t think it has ever been done. Butted it all back up and she’s ready to ride.

Next will be a battery that will keep up with the new audio system. Just not wanting to spend 500 bucks on it right now. Also going to order the tool and bushings to fix the rattling shifter I have. Any recommendations for a good fuel injector cleaner I can add to the tank vs removing them and sending them out? Bike is an 18 Ultra Limited with 297xx miles on it.

plugs look really weathered? or do you wash your bike a lot? (lots of hard water in that area)

I pull mine prob more frequently then required so they dont 'seize' in the cylinder. Not that they would, but, things happen and a $5 plug is pretty cheap. Have worked on cars where plugs are in so long they get sketchy to remove. Good luck. Nice color on the bike.

Thanks! I changed it all just because the bike is new to me. I have no clue what the PO has done or what if ever has been serviced. Only thing I’m sure of is new tires and the 30k service done by dealership before I took it home. Cheap insurance I guess. As for washing, hasn’t really had a thoroughly wash and I use a leaf blower to dry to get the sitting water.

So, are you saying that you just got this bike and the dealer did a 30k service and left those corroded plugs in there? Maybe I'm misunderstanding something here.......

Correct. The bike had almost 29k and the dealer told me they just did the 30k service. Being as this is my first Harley I had no clue what all that entails.

Since the dealer did it, MOST of the time that means doing as little as possible.

I am going to do my fuel filter on the Road Glide when it hits 25k miles soon, did you have to disconnect the furl lines from the filter canister do do the job or can one do it with the lines connected?
Did the one on my Low Rider once and those lines were a bit tricky to disconnect, but on the Dyna had to lift the pump out to change the filter.

You could probably do it without disconnecting. I found it pretty easy to get apart. I did tie string around each one so they could not fall in the tank

any particular reason to do the fuel filter now? hd doesn't spec replacement of the filter until 100,000 miles. though i would do it sooner if it were showing signs of running rough because of it, but otherwise, i'd probably hold off.

I figured it was 20 bucks worth of peace of mind. I know I’m picky about where I get fuel, and anyones fuel could be dirty, but I don’t know what it had before me.
