Default Diag HELP!

I shall take my lashes dutifully, I just rode my '99 RK beyond the driveway for the first time this year New toy got in the way. Figured I'd better get some gas through it. Bike has not been ridden in over 12 months. Started every 4 weeks or so just to keep it moving though. Washed it, took it out nice and easy for about a 25 mile ride.

On the way home 10+miles in I look down and see my 'engine' light illuminated. Everything is running fine, no change in the way the bike feels. It goes on and off at least a dozen times on the way home in as many miles. Checked the oil temp which read anywhere from 185-201. No other lights. I should add my speedometer needle either does not work or reads 120.

Get home, start switch to run, press and hold the odo reset, switch to ignition, release the odo button and I never get the 'diag' signal but only 'do1CLr1' and up to 'do1CLr10' with each successive press of the button ending with 'CAL03'. Don't see these listed as trouble codes. I did this procedure 3 times and only once did the speedo needle sweep, and not very well in its attempt. It had been acting up since last year. Today the tach began going nuts on heavy throttle above 3k RPM.

Looked through a few other threads but didn't see an answer. The only lead I found was to pull the tank and look for pinched wires, which I had yet to do. Other than speedo/tach issues, bike shows no other symptoms. TIA

The only thing I've seen close to this is form a problem with the wiring for the ODO reset button. Does the bike have a black **** to reset the odometer? The code in the display generally indicated there are no DTC's in the system. Some intermittent problems may not set a DTC because the problem needs to exist for a certain amount of time for the code to set.

If it does have the black **** / button, the wires from the switch can short out between the tank and console. You might check there first as it is easy.

Stab in the dark, but some of your symptoms sound like a dirty, or failing, tranny speed sensor. Super easy to pull off and look to see if it looks like this one on my 03 RK..........

If it does, wipe it clean, take it for a ride, see if that got it. If the issue returns, like mine did, I replaced the sensor a few years ago and all is good. Again, just a thought that's easy to check.

I have a black button on the left side. I will look for pinched wires, thank you!

@MotoJockey I should have mentioned I replaced the speedo sensor a year ago trying to chase a bouncing needle. I do appreciate the feedback though.

First off a 99 will only display codes from the speedo by pressing the trip reset button and nothing else.. The only way to show codes from the ICM is to short to pins on the diag connector and watch the engine light flash a code..

Did not know that. Can I assume the engine light being on is because my speedo is acting up?

No but the issue might be caused by the same source. When the regulator went out (voltage too high) on my 2000 FXDX, both the ICM and Speedo did weird things and got errors. I was running aftermarket ignition and it flashed a error code while the speedo dropped to 0..

When my stator and regulator went out my speedometer did all kinds of stuff. All kinds of little things lit up in the speedometer I didn't know were even there. 2012flhrc.
