It has 6 gears. You are supposed to shift into the best gear for the riding conditions. It's not an automatic tranny in a car. It has a clutch and gears. You are the brain.
ACT LIKE IT.
What an assinine and arrogant post.
I had the same reaction.
Yep a bit arrogant, sorry, didn't mean to go there.
I've read so many posts about this and I've read my manual and I've learned not to lug my motor as best that I can. I try to make sure to be close to the right rpm's before shifting up and I shift down when needed.
On a few occassions I've been asked "How's that 6 speed, do you have to downshift on hills?" I'll reply "sometimes I do" in amazement that someone would think that you can just ride in 6th once it's there and forget about it.
I like my bike to be in the power range so it's responsive, especially in traffic so I don't see 6th gear until I hit the highway anyway.
Again, didn't mean to offend, Ya'll ride safe in whatever gear ya choose!
I didn't think it was arrogant at all. Right on the money.

actually that post makes very good sense
who has the grey matter- the rider or the scoot?
if you don't want (or know how)to operate the machine, get on your recliner and let it do everything for you.

That is one bike, I would not buy used. It's been lugged in 6th gear. I don't care what the POS manual says.

Pickles is a bone stock '07 Ultra. She runs along just fine at 60 in 6th.

I have ridden my Ultra in 6th gear many times at 60mph ....on a flat road and the motor sounds/feels greatbut add load (incline, acceleration etc) and the motor doesn't like it. Shifting to 5th or even 4thmay bein order. Just listen to and feel your motor. That tells you better than any tach what's going on in there.

My 07' ultra has 11,000 miles now. Have sert, true duals, se/ac v&h ovals, just added the ISD. Used to clatter in 5th and 6th at low rpm. now 60mph in 6th is comfy on flat ground low wind. hills, curves, high wind. sometimes dictates 5th or lower. comes down to being familer with your machine.

Another expert !
I doubt anyone here is advocating crossing the Rockies in 6th gear. I am comfortable cruising at 60 mph in 6th gear on the appropriate roads. Common sense will tell anyone when that is too slow.

Maybe you should go back to YOUR recliner and think up some more smart *** comments.

You shift as the powerband starts to flatten and you CAN feel that.
If I did my 07 uc I would be shifting at 4,700 rpms
I do have a stage 1 and Ican ride as low as 60 mph without any lugging. However, when riding dual I will maintain at least 65 mph when using 6th.. Someone posted about 11%in 6th and 10% in 5th throttle at th same 60mph. I think that to be true or at least close. I get more mpg when riding dual at 60 mph in 5th than I do whenusing 6th.
The orginal post was refering to the downshifting at or below 55mph from 6th to5th.my 07 manual says the same thing
