1999 Road King Classic issue
I'm new to this forum and to Harleys too.
My 1999 Road King Classic was delivered to me on Thursday afternoon. Love it. Very Happy.
Took it for a ride straight away (as you do..) and it was fine for the first 10 miles but then I came to a bit of a slope and the engine cut out on me. Just stopped running. Pulled over to the side of the road, tried to re-start but was just firing the starter with nothing happening. Shut it all off and left it for five minutes whilst I sat with my head in my hands stressing. Turned the ignition back on and it fired straight up and I carried on riding for about another 20 miles without a problem. I put it down to maybe the bike having been stood for a while and things coming back to life.
Took it out again on Saturday morning and the same thing happened after about a mile. Left it for 5 minutes and it fired up again fine and was fine for the rest of my 75 mile ride. Again put it down to settling in.
But Brought it to work this morning and it happened twice on the way in. Both times I had opened the throttle to go past some slower moving cars and it cut out on me.
Any body have any ideas where to start looking? I dont know whether it is fuelling or electrical.
Are there any common problems on this type/age of bike that would cause this (obvious fixes...)
Thanks
Ben
Could be tank vent plugged to. Next time try loosening the gas cap and see if it starts right up.
Or it could be a fuel filter plugging up. Or just stale gas. Try topping it up with fresh gas.
But as they say, most carbutator problems are electrical. So try the simple stuff first. Fit new sparkplugs.

It's the injected EFI model. I have topped up with fresh petrol but maybe the older crap stuff is still working it's way through... needs more fuel for trip home so..
Guess i'll have to take a tool kit with me and check it next time....
Thanks
Pre 2002 they used the Magneti Marelli fuel injection.
2002 and up uses the Delphi fuel injection.
I dont profess to know anything about fuel injection, but that is what might be the problem. There are some who are knowledgeable in this area, and others have had good success maintaining this system.
I thought I would post so no one else asks carb or EFI. MM or Delphi.

Maybe 1999 or 2000
The broken bracket allowed sensor to tilt and bike would shut off.
It was the bracket and not the sensor.
As if the center console was ON but the run/stop was turned OFF.
You had to cycle the ignition ON/OFF and then it would restart until the next bump in the road.
Check vin number
NHTSA Recall No. 99V291/Harley-Davidson Recall No. 0101
As I understand it, HD techs later era Delphi scanners also work on earlier MM models, but you should check that with them as well.
Good luck!
