Personnally I think they are fad. maybe accentiated by fly by wire making easier to change bars.
Apes have been around since before my 1965 Schwinn Sting Ray.
Mine was stolen from Selwyn Elementary School
Probably some 1%er

Maybe on bikes meant to bike up chicks at school, but not so much on touring bikes.

Another reason may be, more people riding touring bikes, which is good. But they can't face facts, it is touring bike. But there to much of wuss to ride a chopper. I am to much of a wuss.

I don't think they are a fad at all - and I am not talking about the ridiculous apes of the 60-70s that had the easy-rider literally hanging from the bars

The modern day Ape-style bars from LA Choppers, FBI, Khrome Werks, Factory 47, Yaffe, etc are here to stay……improved knuckle forward wrist angle, proper height, and the proper pullback combined with the right seat - and the rider is golden!

I bought a bike with a fairing, so my hands would be behind the fairing. I also think electric grips are more common, which is another reason we have the fad. But everything breaks down sooner or later.

We also have people buying touring bikes, that are not touring, so its about looking cool, not comfort.

Guess time will tell.

My previous 10in LA Choppers bars and my current 11” FBI bars - BOTH - have my hands behind the fairing……

Time will tell for sure - rather than fad - maybe a better term is “trend” - like anything else, trends and preferences change…..

Funny - you mention about riders who want to “look cool”…..I met a guy a few months ago who has a Harley “Rocker” - think they made em 2-3 years - he choppered it up - seat, bars, 1-off custom wheels, lowered suspension, etc…..self professed it “cool lookin ride” and it rides like a hard-tale…….- but he can’t stand the ride, and he admits all of that, and he has to get off it after an hour-ish………people want what they want…..

Fine with me.... there's room enough in the Harley world for both types.....

I could fill a page with the different things that became popular over the years since I've been riding, that wouldn't remotely consider for my bikes. There are many modded bikes I wouldn't even ride if given the chance... I'd feel foolish..

Specific to this thread, I've never been a fan of apes (or the bars with the pointed bend).... But if someone wants to put them on their bike... It doesn't bother me at all...

I've changed bars on both my baggers, but neither of the new bars were apes, or mini-apes. They were just slightly different from the OEM bars, and felt better to me. Most would look at my bikes and not even know it had aftermarket bars....

I like talking about bikes, mods, and riding....

But I know what I like, how I want my bikes to look, and how I want them to feel when I ride them.... I don't allow anyone to dictate what I do to my bikes, and while I'll share an opinion if asked, I'm not about to tell someone what I believe they should do to their bike.....

Agree I am secure in enough my man hoof to talk about it. Just typing stuff while sitting in my recliner relaxing. A person should be able to say, this is what I like. And another person should be able to say, I prefer this. Just killing time.

Got a set of stock takeoff RGL bars in my garage. They're valuable to me. I grab them periodically to remind myself how much better the 12" F47 bars feel to me.
