Guys, your diagnosis was spot on. I removed the original 15-year-old voltage regulator and replaced it with an Amazon import. Test start and short ride everything worked. Today I took a longer Drive and the voltage stayed at 14.2 almost consistently. I think my problem is solved. Thanks for all the useful advice.

And you don't need to be near a dealer to get codes. Google the process...its fairly simple and after you do it a few times you will remember it. Let us know how that Amazon regulator holds up.
