I have the basic HD brand heated grip on my 19 SGS. I just returned from running the Pacific coast from Northern Oregon to San Simeon CA, and had the grips turned on the entire time. Now my throttle is sticking, and it seems that the grip may have swollen. I put the factory non heated grip on, and it's not sticking and returns to idle perfectly.

I took some fine sandpaper and cleaned out the inside of the grip and sanded a little off the bars but this did no good. Also tried a little graphite without success.

I've not heard of these things swelling and causing my issue before.... any suggestions?

 

I had this happen with a pair of very hot heated grips on no factory grips. Worked ok with factory grips. Swelled up and throttle was stuck open, few thousands miles from home. Harley ones I don't run that hot. But maybe being from vegas you run yours hotter.

These ones only had high and low, and low was to hot.. So far so good with factory, I worry more about them failing.

 

Can anyone translate this for me? I have no idea WTF that says.

 

He's had the same problem with aftermarket grips. Maybe because they run hotter than the Harley grips he now uses. They only had 2 settings and low was still too hot for him. He's wondering if maybe you're having this problem because Vegas is hot. He's now only worried about the Harley grips failing but so far they have not. Does that help?

 

I think I understand it, thanks. Please let him know that I don't use them in Vegas when it's hot out.

 

I have not heard this! I just installed the same grips with my new bars. I am intrigued, and want to hear if you come up with anything.

 

These grips are not the most durable. I'm on my 3rd set in 8 years but I was probably responsible for most of the failures. One thing about the rubber on these grips is that it breaks down if you have bug spray or sunscreen on your hands. I always wore gloves until I wrapped the grips with leather covers. A little pricey but they work awesome. Having said that I've never heard of this issue with sticky throttle before.

 

I put a stock non-heated grip on the throttle side yesterday and ran a bunch of errands today - probably about 75 miles. Acceleration and throttle control is back to being very smooth and not at all jerky due to the sticky heated grip. Thinking back on this, it's been this way for quite a while. I guess I've just gotten used to it. This trip I just completed is when the throttle would actually stick and not return to idle. I'm not sure why I'm going to do, but this is quite disappointing. The heated grips have only been on since 10/21 and about 22k miles. Maybe that's all they're good for? I won't need them for many months now, but if I find a solution I'll try and remember to come back here with what I did.

 

Very close. I meant being from Vegas he may be a wuss for cold,and have them on a higher setting than I would use.

 

So it turns out a RH heated grip is available individually for a ridiculous price, or I can spend $227.95 and get the whole kit and have a spare left side.
