Gotta wonder if it was a failed experiment....

Someone (engineering) thought it was a good idea.....

Then it either didn't work as expected, of a bean counter scratched it a not needed.....

NOTE:
After reading 7.22 of the 2011 Factory Service Manual, I went and looked up 7.22 in both my 2012 & 2016 Factory Touring Service Manuals.

In the later editions of the Service Manual, nothing is mentioned about O-rings. On installation, they say, "Installation is complete when the cable stop contacts the casting", instead of the 2011 manual's "Installation is complete when retaining O-ring bottoms on casting."

Sure sounds like a one year fix.....

Better living through chemistry, sometimes old school is still the best way to go.

You're missing the point. It's a zero-year fix. Even though it was mentioned in the 2011 Model year Technical Forum document, and it was mentioned in the 2011 Touring factory service manual, I don't think it was ever implemented.

You're most likely correct....

They probably got all set to implement it, then there was a change of plans, and everything stayed the same... I'm sure there are more of these in the manuals over the years that we're not aware of....

And yet, I still always buy the Factory manuals over a Clymer or similar....
