Default crank seal replacement

My primary is filling with oil on my 89 softail custom. Looking in my service manual I can't find out anything regarding removing the seal. Does the stator need to come off or once the compensator and rotor is off can it be taken out by using sheet metal screws in the old seal and is there enough room to install the new one with a socket as a driver. thanks for the info.

Stator does not have to be removed.

I just did this repair. It is fairly easy as far as there is 0 mental gymnastics. Torquing to 170 pounds is a challenge. Look at my threads, you'll see it.

If you put a metal brace between the two sprockets then getting your 170 lbs of torque is pretty simple.

Or 5th gear and a buddy (or wife) holding the rear brake very tight!!!! I would do this on a jack though!!! Cause if the brake slips the bike will lurch forward. But if I had my choice a brace in the sprockets is the best way to go.

An air impact gun works fine on Evo's and early Twin Cams. It was only in '07 that Harley didn't recommend using them anymore after the introduction of the cheap cast cranks.

Default thanks everyone!

will do this as a spring project as well as the base gaskets. As a side, I have a super e carb not sure of the jetting but I am getting 40+mpg. I had been told that these carbs are gas suckers so I never checked it. Pleasantly surprised.

my CV is wayyyy overrated by the people on this forum, it is no better than my super-e in fact i suspect it to be worse. 1995 Flstc gets 150 miles then i gotta go to the reserve tank, about the same on the 1998 fltr but the tank is supposedly 1 gallon bigger. ymmv and mine certainly has!
