Default Road King speedometer fluctuates

The speedometer on my 1998 RK just started fluctuating today on a 60-mile ride. It quit working altogether (dropped to zero) and then started working again, then quit, then worked again, etc. Off and on, off and on. Of course, the odometer wasn't advancing during the off period. Any ideas of what is causing this?

Seems to be a fairly common gripe that can take several forms (as far as symptoms go) but they all revert to the same root cause culprit. A dirty speedo sensor and the fix is easy. Clean it.

Most likely speedo sensor as Jinkter says, try to clean it. Happened to my 2002 RK and I cleaned it, worked for a couple of days, then done. Had to replace it.
I bought a take-off from a wrecked bike off of e-bay.

Bad ground, or bad connection wire. Clean, tighten all connections including battery. Problem should go away 90% of the time. Common issue during that era. My ‘96 did that.

Cleaning it is not as easy as you make it out to be. On my 98 RKC you have to remove the starter to get to where the sensor bolts onto the transmission. Not an easy task.

Since yours is a twin cam engine it must be easier to get to the sensor than it is on my evo engine. I have to remove the starter to get to where mine bolts to the tranny. Thanks for your reply.
