My brother was telling me the other day that when he was shopping for insurance for his Dyna Wide Glide that one of the places he talked to asked if he was parking his bike in a garage or outside. When he inquired about this he was told that it would cost more for garage storage because most owners don't lock their bikes when they put them into their garage and as a result there is a higher theft rate from garages than from car ports. Thinking about this I realized that I do this and changed my practice. So I am wondering how many others do not lock their bikes when they park in their garage?
Yeah, I lock mine, always, everywhere. Plus I have eyehooks installed into the walls by the door, and I insert steel rods that lock the door from the inside. No-one is stealing my ride.
Thats funny. My insurance company asked if I had a carport or Garage. I have a carport and also asked them the relevance. They said that carports have higher premiums because the bike can be seen from the road and is therefore more tempting to thieves. I have a feeling there is a flowchart with answers on it. The title is probably, "How to get the highest premium" . Go figure.

Never in the garage, and I could say I rarely lock it outside... I have the alarm always on, and can't imagine someone strong enough to raise this half ton bike on a truck

Ding ding ding ding ding
That is what I am thinking too.
Just the same I don't want anyone trying to make off with my ride so locking it is a small thing
I never lock it when in the garage, but then again, anyone that can steal it from my garage, without losing a leg or more, can have it...the Rotwieller lives in the garage...
Not lucky enough to have a garage or car port, last year my bike was covered and chained to a tree in my driveway, this year I bought a 6x10 v-nose enclosed trailer,it's chained to a tree with the stabilizer legs in the down position so i can pull in and out of it like it was a shed. Both doors are locked, lock my steering and run my braided cable lock through the front wheel and frame to a eye bolt under the bike and lock it. I had the alarm guy wire the trailer into my alarm system in the house(monitored) if either door is opened or the wire is unplugged from the trailer the house alarm goes off,and the alarm company notifies the P.D.
when i'm out on the road I lock steering and run the cable through the front wheel and frame to a post or parking meter if either is available,if not usually to a buddies bike if one happens to be out riding with me that day.
the bike has alot of insurance,it's locked the best i can..... if someone wants it ,they'll take it i'm sure.........I do what I can to deter/slow them down,I dont want to lose my ride either.
Hey Marc,
I'd worry about a tow truck picking it up. Around my house, the cops caught tow trucks cruising parking lots and stealing cars. Alarms would go off but everyone (except the cops) thought they were illegally parked. What do you think about Lojack. That is what I had installed a week after I picked up my bike.
