been a lurker for a while. purchased a new to me 99' roading, after a 20 year riding hiatus. Want to do some upgrades and want to share my thoughts.
A lot of the styling was bothering me so I switched everything back to stock to include:
Handlebars
New rear pads
Upgraded front and rear wheels/new tires
All lights replaced to stock
New rear billet belt sprocket
I soldered all the wires and used Deutsch connectors with my Deutsch tool...
good call on the bars. those in the pictures look like crap.
did or come with bags or nay?
It came with original bags... Here are some further progress shots... You can see the new wheels, brake discs, bars, mirrors, Baron Tach, and corrective wiring. I added Screaming' Eagle slash cut tips. I changed all the fork seals/bushings and fluids. I also re-pressurized the air over shock system.
I used to be an avid painter, but no longer have the time to do it, so I sent the tins off for a refresh. In the meantime I wanted to get into the cam chest. So off came the intake on my MM
After cracking the cam chest I wasn't surprised that after 30,000 miles the cam chain tensioners crumbled in my fingers. The good news was that my crankshaft pinion runout was .0005" along with a crank pinion deflection of .001" So a total of .0015" That was an awesome feeling that a worn out TC88 had such tight tolerances! So then it was engine building time...
I installed new cam bearings and a Feuling HP plus billet cam chest kit, and billet Feuling Oil pump. I upgraded to hydraulic cam tensioners and went with a chain drive. I could have probably gone with a gear drive due to my tight tolerances, but you have to keep closer eye on such setups. I used a 130 shim to line up my gears and went with Feuling Reaper cams (No Bullshit, Just Performance) 543's
