Default Engine guard top bolt

I've been working on cars and bikes most of my life, and that's a long time. But I have never ran across this before. I am putting a new engine guard on my 2319 Ultra Limited and can't figure out the top bolt. The threads are on the guard itself. The bolt goes into the bar and then into a hole with no threads in the frame. How the hell is that going to hold anything. Seems the bolt should go thru the bar and then into a threaded hole in the frame or a nut behind the frame. Can anyone tell me what I am missing here? My parts manual only shows the bolt with a washer going thru the bar and then into the frame.

The guard tab goes behind the frame hole. The bolt then goes thru the frame in to the threaded hole on the guard.

If I recall on my Freewheeler a few years back, I had the same issue. I think it was supposed to attached like chopper man said above but mine could/did not. I ended up drilling those threads out on the engine guard, getting a bolt, and a washer behind the frame and that worked fine.

Chopper man is right. Many fail to install the top first per the FSM. Loosely install the top first, swing the bottom into position, and loosely start the bottom. If the bottom is threaded before the top tab is positioned behind the cross member, the top tab will swing outside of the cross member.

What is the Tab? My parts manual only shows the bolt and washer.

Tab is welded to guard and tucks up under and behind the bracket with the hole in it first, then swing the guard back ant the install the lower mounting bolts. I would start the "tab" bolt first but leave it loose tighten after lower bolts are started.

Yeah, it's a lot easier to repair when someone strips out the threads and they aren't part of the frame.

Interesting that Harley hasn’t changed the design by 2319!
