I had melted boot heel all over the left header pipe on my Ultra.
It was from a Doc Marten boot and the mess was epic.
To clean it off I used a cigar lighter to heat the goo and then scrubbed it off while it was soft using #0000 steel wool.
Worked like a champ.
I followed up with more #0000 steel wool and Maguire's metal polish compound.
Looked brand new after.
Once in awhile my boot heel will touch the pipe and leave a rubber "scuff" mark on the pipe. After everything cools off a few drops of chrome cleaner on a piece of paper towel takes it off completely with a little rubbing. Works for me, but again I only have what amounts to melted "scuff" marks....NOT a heavily melted thick blob.
After that I go to GOOP hand cleaner, again not a harsh chemical but very effective at softening things without being destructive. I use this approach at the shop to bring old, vintage used parts back to life without causing damage life harsher chemicals can, Rubbing alcohol is another safer solvent.
