Can you remove packing in mufflers without modifying tune?

Needing to retune would imply more exhaust flow. My bet is that if you pull the packing, you'll lose power. My bet is that exhaust flow is actually hampers by this move. You're taking something that provides orderly flow and absorbs some of the sound waves to something where flow becomes chaotic and sound waves bounce around affecting flow. If this were at all beneficial then the "for off road use only" guys would make performance exhaust without packing. The muffler was designed to be most efficient with packing. Changing that is to a detriment, IMO.

I'm no fluid dynamics expert, but it only makes sense. To me anyway. I wouldn't mess with it.

i took the db reducers out of my S&S grand nationals. It lost notable power and sounded louder. I put them back in. I would say you'll have to retune.
