Can you remove packing in mufflers without modifying tune?
I need to pull my V&H Monster Ovals endcaps because of pealing and was thinking of removing the packing in the mufflers. If I keep the baffles and remove the packing do I need to "re-tune" my 103?
Completely changes the tuning requirements of the bike and will make it way louder. Probably an unpleasant sound as well as empty end cans sound awful.
So 2 votes for yes, and one for no. Are these opinions or are there facts to back it up?
take this with the usual grain of salt, but i often change mufflers (stock, noisy, noisier, etc) depending on how bored i am. sometimes air cleaner too when i get tired of oil drips from the sportier one. never bother to change EFI tune, bike runs good regardless.
but keep in mind it is a proper tune, not the stock lean-**** greta mandated carp. ymmv.

Nice write up by an actual user. The more knowledgeable regarding back pressure, decibel maximums in their neighborhood, how they fixed any number of exhaust issues and several posts regarding product quality will be informative and certainly welcomed for varying reasons.
I am amused by what I quoted. Merry Christmas to you.
Been around a bunch, first time I seen a feller suddenly spring up, thrust a finger skyward and say, I'll change a muffler.

If you want facts to back it up, you need to put a wideband O2 sensor in your pipes, remove the packing, and drive it and find out. The fuel trims will be different, whether they are different enough for you to think it's worth it to adjust the tables is a judgment call, not a factual question.
