LONG crank when cold.
Anyways, I have some problems with it. When its cold, it cranks for a long time, like 10 seconds, no start, just turning over. Then, when I release the ignition button after the failed attempt, it sputters loudly one time out the tail pipe. Just one loud Tuft sound. A few more failed attempts, then it will finally start. Starter fluid has no effect. After I ride it, itll start back up no problem. (Hot starts are fine). The bike will run around all day like this basically. Once its running, it runs great. Tons of power, doesnt lack or hesitate at all. Also the fuel gauge is inaccurate. Like very inaccurate. It pretty much reads anywhere from 3/4 to full all the time. The low fuel light will come on after 150-200 miles as it should, but the gauge doesnt change.
no check engine light, but I did check codes anyway:
I have one single code.
B1005- Fuel Level Sending Unit High/Open
Im sure this has something to do with the fuel gauge being inaccurate, but is there any correlation to the long crank?
today I got curious and pulled the fuel assembly out the tank. Everything appears to be in good shape. Clean, float isnt stuck, filter isnt all full of crap. Gas looks good.
I havent checked the plugs honestly. Just because of the fact that it runs so good once its running. Figured they must be good.
What throws me is the starter fluid has no effect. Obviously, its spark and not fuel if you're actually getting spray in front of the intake. Just hitting on the outside of the filter is probably not getting it.
Make sure your throttle position sensor is not stuck and working. Check it with a simple OHM meter.
Does it help to open the throttle slightly when cranking? If so, IAC is sticking. Once sticking, and spraying carb cleaner or spray starter fluid will wash the black crud up into the step motor and kill it. No fix other than replace. Check it with the air filter off. Key on and you will see it pull back out of the air port for idle air to the last idle position. Key off and it jumps back in shutting off idle air to stop run-on.
Be sure and clean around the butterfly with a cotton cloth wet with fuel injector cleaner. That's part of your base idle air.
Spray also kills temperature sensor.

Only as a suggestion, but very important, create a signature line similar to mine on your bike with the year, model, and all the letters Harley assigned to the bike. It will appear at the bottom of your post.
You can also add a favorite picture to the signature line.
Doing this will be helpful if you ask a question or to someone asking a question. All Harleys aren't the same with many changes and variations over the years.
You can also add a favorite picture for an Aviator postage stamp you see at the top left of your post.

I will add that the throttle on this bike was VERY stiff when I bought it. It had no spring back. I had to lube the cables very generously to get it back to normal. I mean it was sticking bad.
how do you add the signature?
