My problem is that I can't get the ignition switch out all the way. I was able to find the "hidden button" under the switch and able to turn the ignition key counterclockwise to the 6 o'clock position. This, however, only allows the ignition switch to pop up about 1/4". I will not come out the rest of the way.
Search for the topic of splicing wires to have spotlights on with the high beam on. Pretty entensive discussion to remove that switch. Discussion was about three months ago.
At that point the switch should almost pop off in your hands. Are you pressing down on the switch while holding the magic button underneath and using the key to swing the ignition all the way over counter clockwise. not sure if it has to make it all of the way to 6 o'clock but once you past acc the whole swicth should just pop up and then just pull it up and out. Be sure to pay careful attention to how it all comes apart, there is a spring in there and a few other small parts. They need to go back on in the rigtht order or the ignition won't work.

Service manual lists the Correct way to tighten bars is to remove radio and you can acess the screws, no need to remove switch. Ive done it the way your trying and even with console removed you can barely get to the bolts, its not the best way to do the job.
Yeah there should be nothing else holding the switch in if it moved up a little bit, maybe wiggle it a bit. You can also get to the bolts by removing the radio it takes a little more time, but if you remove the radio be sure you first pull the connector off under the radio that attaches in between the risers,if you dont you can break the tab that locks that connector in...ask me how I know...

It may not be exactly 6 o'clock, but the book says 60° from the locked position. Also, while pulling up keep the magic button depressed. It should work, and like Bonzo said watch the small parts, and make sure you put them back in the right order and position. Spring will fall out when switch is removed.
