I just had my 1000 mile service done on 2007 RG. I noticed the dealer had posted pricing for 2500 mile service ($164), however my owners manual shows next service at 5000miles. So is the 2500 service necessary or should I wait til 5000?
No the next HD Service is at 5K but the dealers suggest an oil change at 2.5K thats what I did on my Road King in 05 and I had em put in synthetic oil . I then had them do the HD Service at 5K and then when I had 6.5K had them change the oil. My next service HD reccomends is the 10K so Im changing the oil every 2.5 K or 3K in between the services had no problems so far beside the stealler rates are at about $90.00 for oil changes, synthetic oil about $9 qt plus filter etc. The deler is quoting $450.00 for 10K services thats the selling dealer, the other dealer I go to will do it for $350.00 thats where Im goin, thanks Bill
Pre-2004 models recommended an oil change at 2500 intervals..... 2004 and newer models went to 5000 mile intervals as in the owners manual...... at first they said all holes @5000 then they increased the primary to 10,000 and the tranny to 20,000........ HAVE FUN !!!
I think your throwing away your money by changing syn. every 2500 miles,Just changed the Amsoil in mine that had 5000 miles on it and it was not too dirty looking.
I bought a manual, and did my own 5k, and will do the rest. No need to pay the dealer for something you can do yourself, IMO. Get a manual, and you can do just the oil change yourself, if you feel that the 5k, 10k etc are to much to handle. Changing the fluids in the three holes is no big deal. I now have Amsoil in my bike, and regardless of what the manual might say, I am changing it every 2500 miles. Oil is cheap enough, and it is very simple, once you learn not to f+ up the o rings...ask me how I know. LOL

Normally it is not the oil that breaks down as much as the filter.
I'm about to have my 1000K done on a 08 RK. What is the ball park cost for this and what do they do exactly--I trust that they don't f**k with the ECU (downloads etc) without telling you first???

You should be able to get it done in the $300 range. Any more than that, and I would go to an independent bike shop. I had my 1k done at one. Just save the receipt and you will not have to worry about warranty issues. I did my 5k myself, and will do all my services from this point forward. No reason to pay big bucks for something you can do yourself. As far as what is covered, if you look in the service manual, it will tell you what needs to be done. Since you have an '08, you might not be able to get a manual, yet,but when one becomes available, get it.
