Default Changin oil

Changing oil tonight, put plug back in, new filter on, poured 3.5 quarts, just like service manual says. Checked it cold, barely in between the two arrows. Take it for a short ride, get it up to tempature, check it hot, end up adding the other half quart (4 total now ) and it's still a little shy. Is this normal to anyone else?

I think Bryan is right, because appearently bikes do vary for whatever reason. However, I would say "hot" means really "hot", not just the kind of hot you get from a short ride. When really hot, have it right at the full mark, no more. I don't know about the '06's, but my '07 will barf through the breather when I install four quarts. I have an oil cooler, which may not make a difference since oil probably remains in the cooler during a change, but I'm not sure. I installed 3.5 qts. last time, then added another 8 oz. (total 3.75 qts.), and I haven't had any barfing since. I'll try the same procedure and if it continues the same way I'll settle on that for the future.

It's hot enough to check when you burn your fingers pulling the dipstick.
Ooops....maybe I shouldn't wear my fingerless gloves when checking my oil. It's stupid and gay.

I run 4 quarts in both of my bikes. 1 quart in the trans and 1-1/4 quarts in theprimary.

On my bike I throw 4 quarts in after the oil change and it's spot on.

3.5 quarts is meant to be a starting point. Adjust accordingly.
