Does your bike have CAN bus?

If the answer is yes then I would suspect something is wrong with the module inside the hand control.

Touring bikes didn't have CanBus until 2014....

The rear brake light switch was a common problem back when the 2011 bike was new. There was a recall for it on certain years..

I'm pretty sure he has found his problem, he just needs to replace that rear brake switch....

I took the bike in for the recall 6 years ago- they replaced it with a supposedly improved switch, which just failed.
All is well until this one fails

Good luck finding a dealer in my neck of the woods that will work on a bike older than 10 years.

People get worked up when I tell them I won't let any shop touch my bikes. I think it triggers a minor insecurity that they aren't comfortable with their own skillset perhaps. One guy who joined my (very small) riding circle for a trip said he wasn't comfortable riding with someone who didn't have their bike serviced at a professional shop.

Maybe it was the car tire that triggered him
