I followed all the '07 "noise" threads on this board closely for the past year with plans of getting an '08. I can't for the life of me figure out why there are some that seem to **** on every threadthat reports the IDS has improved or solved the noise issues they were having with the '07 trans. It seems like they are disappointed there is a solution.
Some, blame it on the rider for lugging, some blame it on HD design, some, seem to believe since their '07 doesn't make noise, it doesn't exhists in any '07, and some feel MOCO owes them a free IDS and an apology. I've rented 2 different '07s and clearly heard the whinning in both (at high rpms).
Why is it so difficult to believe? If the IDS helps (which by all reports helps or cures) WTF is the problem? What is the psychology behind this denial or victimization? Why is it hard to be happy others are happy?
Well for one thing the whining wasn't a real issue, it was the rattling it made below 2300 rpm's in higher gears...
Which the re-designed compensator and added IDS unit seemed to solve it for the 08'... as for trans problems not sure as I've never thought
the trans was a problem...IMHO...
There are some people that would complain about being hung with a new rope. It's obvious that there are a majority of happier 07 and 08 owners out there now after the IDS system install. Everyone has the right to decide if it's something they want. I would think if it has quieted the noise issue for so many already.......then why not go with it and fall in love with your bike again?
I think what some peoples complaint is if HD created the IDS to fix a problem, then they are admitting there is a problem. So in their mind it should be a free fix. Or there should not be the problem in the first place. I can relate to that a little. If you have a design flaw and have to create something to fix it, then it should be offered to those who have a problem. Just like the 25° injector fix.
If it helps, go for it. My 07 SG doesn't clatter and I won't be needing it. I bet there will be some 08 owners that remove the IDS for a perceived "better " or more direct drive etc. as an improvement. Maybe some of us just like to tinker.
What ever happen to MOCO doing all this testing on their bikes? Seems to me they should FIRE the driver of the Touring model for the 07's for not failing the tranny. But, there are some out there that don't have an issue or don't acknowledge the issue. Either way, IMHO MOCO made a mistake not testing the the tranny further. It's all about the money now adays. About this IDS, its a band aid for the tranny. Over the past 100 years MOCO has never had to have an IDS to quiet the tranny. My 1998 FXDWG still shifts great and is quiet as can be. Seems to me like this is a CHEAP band aid for the MOCO not the end user! I myself have a little issue of noise, not bad, just put in Heavy Shock Proof Oil and it made a 90% difference. I don't want to take away anything from anyone that installed the IDS and says that is the cure. Take away the IDS and the problem is STILL THERE.. It's a band aid, the tranny never cured itself. I myself am thinking about installing one, but I would still like to see a fix, I know the Baker is out there, and should fork over the $1K... Sad that I have to spend an extra grand to solve an issue with my tranny while the bike is still under FACTORY WARRANTY!!!!!! Maybe I am alone thinking like this?
Look at the posts. You can pick out those, I believe, think are either dealers, work for dealers, factory workers, or some how have a holding with the HD motor company.
Me, Yes i love the Harley thing.Had a Harley 1 st bike.50cc.Fact out of the 13 RKC mine makes the most clatter in 5th gear.Still love to ride it. Wife too. Order my IDS from Zamotti. It's back order. I can wait.
