Navigation System
Google Maps is great at getting you from point A to B on their predetermined route(s). My problem with Google Maps is I have still not figured out (and I've asked) how to plan a "custom" route on my desktop and send it to my phone.
With the HD Ride Planner, I plot my route on my desktop, it's automatically transferred to the app on my phone, and then easily transferred to the bikes GPS. I've done this many times and it works pretty much flawlessly.
Most recently we went to visit our son & daughter in law in Boston. Plotted a 3 day round about way getting there, and a different 3 day route coming home. Worked perfectly.
I will stick to a reliable Garmin GPS.
I use google to help plan trips but Basecamp to create routes then download them to my gps.
But if you want to send routes to your phone look at the link I posted, couldn't load a screenshot of the map. On the left just below options are 2 hot buttons. The first is send directions to iPhone the second is copy link. I did have to sign into Google to send to iPhone, but you can copy the link and email it to yourself.

And it would be nice if you could save these routes in Google Maps and call them up as required. No option for saving multiple routes for multi-day trips.
Adding Waypoints
There's a Hack for That

I wrote myself this note, a year or so ago. Handy for planning Iron Butt Rides.
The simple answer about multi day trips or multiple waypoints on a ride would be to break the ride up into days or hours. Make a map for each day and send all the URLs in 1 email.
Sample email
Day 1 https:.......
Day 2 https:.......
Day 3 Morning https.....
Day 3 Afternoon https.......
Hack for 25 waypoints - check map url at the end.Adding Stops to Google maps:
Open Google maps and start a trip, click on the Blue Diamond with the white arrow.
Add 10 stops, notice the plus sign to add more stops is not active now.
Go up to the URL and find the @ sign. You can add up to15 forward slashes to give you 15 more stops. Or add 1 slash at a time.
You can add addresses in the slots or just click on the map to add stops. Once you fill all the stops or hit enter the route line – blue line will appear.
You may have to adjust the font size to see all the added stops: control and the minus key for smaller font, control + to enlarge font.

And sorry to the OP...didn't mean to hi-jack his thread. I wish I had an answer for him but as I said...mine works as designed. And because it works, I haven't even bothered with the latest software update.
And yes, I'm aware that the software update & map update are 2 different things. I've never bothered with map updates. Maybe I will, but to date, I haven't run into a situation yet where the map base was out of date.
Not everyone has to use the same setup. Prior to having the GTS with built in nav, I was very happy with my Garmin that I used on my 2012 UC (still miss a couple of its features). Use whatever works for you and ride on.
