You asked for any tips going forward....
Get rid of the Test Light and buy a multimeter. You Tube has videos that will help you learn about DC circuits and how to check them with a multimeter.
HD schematics are in the Service and Electrical Diagnostic manuals. They are not too hard to follow and will help you troubleshoot electrical problems, aka, making informed decisions rather than guessing.

On Amazon, pick one in the $10-20 range and it should do the basics for what you need. READ THE REVIEWS on a few of them. BTW: were talking about a Digital Volt Meter.

Any of the Big Box stores have digital multimeters for under $50. I like Fluke but they are very $$$.
