I ride a 06 FLHX and these breaks squeal from day 1. Is this at all normal? I thought they quiet up a bit, but no. I've had it over 1 year, so I guess they won't cover this. I'll do brakes if I have to. Anybody have this issue???
You probably need to turn your rotors around ... switch sides. I think Harley will do this for you as a "fix" to a known problem. This of course assumes that it hasn't been done already. My '06 came with the rotors reversed already and I haven't had a problem. Do a search here ... this has been disussed before.
Yep. Check the rotor location. Normally it would be right on right and left on left. If they are still this way, take it to the dealer and he will switch them, for free. It was in a service bulletin out sometime back. Also, before this came to light, I went in for the same issue on my '05 rk custom. Same wheels as yours, except mine is not black in the middle of it. There is a chrome dome that sits between the rotor and the wheel, my dealer but foam/silicon in them and that stopped the noise. I did switch the rotors, when the bulletin came out, but that was only to see if it could stop the dragging noise, and it did, pretty much.
So, I would look at the rotors first. Make sure the one on the brake side says left (right side of bike) and the one on the clutch side says right (left side of bike.). If this has not been done, try this first. It wont cost you anything. If it has been done, or you still get the noise, see if they can add some kind of foam or silicon to the dome thing. Still, should not cost you anything. If that all fails, you will have to spend money on some new brake pads. Lyndall Z seems to be the most effective, as it will create very little dust. Hope this helps.
Switching the rotors is justone of two things to do. Matching up the cooling vents, left to right is also part of the tech bullentin. If your scoot is under two years old Harley should do it for you. I did the jobmyself, it takes about 45 min to an hour. You will need a jackor MC lift, and should have a torgue wrenchso you know you are gettingeverything back to specs. It fixed my problem and no noise for the last 1500 miles.
A better solution than just switching the rotors is to use a damping gel inside the hub underneath the rotors - RTV is what we use. Works 100% of the time .
