A little over 17000 miles. The end of October will be 5 years old. I don't spray chemicals or direct water on them. Hasn't been in any heavy rain and is garage kept. I think it's crazy that it went out. The pulley bearings and left wheel bearing seems ok

That's always my thought. The number of times I've replaced bearings that were installed by a 400 Lb gorilla with a sledge hammer is nuts. Side loaded all to heck by the spacer tube.
Yeah, it also doesn't help that all the cheapo bearing installers (and at least 1 expensive one ) can set people up for failure.
It's certainly possible to mess just about anything up on a motorcycle. The part that gets me is when people open the package, throw the instructions away, beat the thing into place with the heavy end of an adjustable wrench, then go nuts about how the product is 'useless junk' when it fails.
It reminds me of seeing cars burning on the side of the road and wondering if the driver was proud to have installed their own stereo. Not that they would ever attribute the fire to their own expertise.
