I have a question for you guys. I have a 2003 Ultra and after46,800 miles the transmission disentegrated. Most of the gears stripped and the main shaft and counter shaft are stripped. Is this a problem with this transmission? The service rep at the dealer said it is a common thing. He said I was lucky it lasted as long as it did. I can not believe a Touring bike would have this kind of problem after just 46,800 miles. Any of you guys had this problem before? Thanks
They tell you everything is common and "they all do that". It's a sign of a dealer/mechanic that doesn't know jack.The 03 trans was a good unit, problem is that some used syn3 or an engine oil in it and that isn't the best for a long life. Use of a gear oil is recommended over an engine oil regardless of the rating system they use for the two oils.
I had syn3 in it. But I have been using that or Amsoil for that past 4 years. What should I be using?
I'm sure that had something to do with your failure. Even HD stopped usingsyn3 in the trans in 04-05 .Use a gear oil in the transmission. Mobil1 75/90 or 75/140, redline, belray, or any other good gear oil.
Not sure if you are serious about the 6 speed cruise drive suggestion. I don't beleive the TC88 is compatible with the 6 speed cruise drive tranny. The TC88 can be bolted to a 6 speed SE tranny or a Baker DD5/DD6.Excellent proven quiet choices.

Yes. I was serious abouta 6 speed.Didn`t really think if would fit a Cruise Drive or not.. If your replacing a 5 speed complete, thenyou should replace it with a 6 speed...IMHO
