Default pinion gear flhtc

Hello need some advice for 1995 flhtc starter pinion gear. The pinion gear i pulled out with jackshaft is 9 tooth. Ring gear is 66 tooth. Parts book # parts are 10 tooth . Obviously someone has been in there before i bought bike a 3 years ago. Ring gear is bolted on. Piniongear is done. Jack shaft is broke. I may have caused that as I hit the starter with primary cover off. So not being original setup for the year is the 9 tooth pinion sufficient with the 66 tooth ring gear.? Is there advantage to reverting back to 10 tooth with 102 t ring gear?
Thanks for you advice.

The 9/66 starter ratio is supposed to be stronger than the 10/102 setup. The gear teeth are larger.

Technically 10/102 is a lower gearing.

If the 66 tooth ring gear looks good and you are not having any issues starting, I'd simply go with a new pinion. If not I'd go with 10/84 Compufire pinion/ring but only because I've used a number of them and they are easy to get.

I believe I may have one at home. I bought a 1995 Dyna starter and they sent me the complete jackshaft and everything. I installed a BDL belt drive that uses a different one. I can check when I get home this evening and count the teeth on it. If I have one, you are welcome to it. I have no use for it. I just looked at my parts book and mine is probably 10T, but I will check.

The one I have is 10 teeth. You are welcome to it if you want it. PM me a mailing address and I will send it to you if you want it.

Thankyou for the generous offer. I think I will have to pass on it tho because the ring gear is 66 tooth. I am not sure that the gear and teeth will match. The ring gear is in very good condition. I hope someone will benefit from your generosity.
Thanks again
