I just changed my oil in my 2011 FLHTK 103 with 68K miles. I used Mobil HD 15w-40 Synthetic Blend this time as some say they have been using regular desiel oil for years without issue. I also put in a new HI-FLOW filter because it has the nut on the oil filter.
After the the change I am getting about 3 lines on the gage when warm and idling at 1k rpms, I do get a higher reading when I open the throttle to 2K rpm, attached is some pictures of my Gage, there is no new noises of drivability issues.
Your thoughts...
Is this 5 # of oil pressure ? Is this 17# of oil pressure ?
I run 20-50 Mobil v-twin oil in both of my Roadglides and never had an issue with oil pressure. If you had more pressure reading on gauge before, most likely viscosity is too thin.
I've used Rototilla 15w-40 for break in oil (500 and dump) and in the primary. (Use 20w50 walmart now.) I wouldn't use it as a regular oil because it is high detergent and the detergent neuters the lubricity of the oil.. I would think that a good non diesel motor oil 15w40 would be fine for a cooler climate but am wrong. M8 owners say a minimum of 20w50. I've used 15w50 M1 synthetic with good results but will say the that right pinion bearing on a 113 ci 124hp EVO was worn at 50000 miles. My 07 egc blew a lifter roller with about 45000 miles on the lifter and 125000 on the motor. The rods bearings were worn but the mains looked new.. I suspect that it was running a little too rich at cruise as the oil was always black.
I've been using Rotella T4 and T6 for about the entire life of this engine (@ 85K miles). If I ever break the engine down I'll take some pics if things look bad.
OP: as long as you don't hear your lifters clattering you prob have enough oil pressure... As said, these gauges are notoriously incorrect - and at idle, these engines don't need a ton of pressure.
