Default Handlebar dimension question

I was just looking through some handlebar specs on the HD site. What exacty is the knurl center to center measurement?? And do you have to use bars that match that measurement exactly???

The knurl is where the suface of the bars is cut at the location where they mount. So, you do want that measurement close.
