I am new to the forum. I, currently ride a BMW k1200LT. While I feel it is a great motorcycle, it just isn't me. I've been looking at an '08 Road Glide. I had some time off today and I stopped by my local Harley dealer and he showed me a blue '08 Road Glide and it just called to me. I'm looking for a bike that is stable at highway speeds, comfortable for long stretches of saddle time, doesn't buffet the helmet and doesn't cook the legs. I realize that an air cooled bike is going to be hotter than a water cooled bike, but I heard the '08s are cooler than th '07s ? The other thing that concerns me is high speed stability. I have heard some say that Harley touring bikes can have a high speed wobble due to the way the motor is mounted to the frame. I have heard people say that there are after market fixes for this, I think one of them is called ridestr8, or something like that. I asked my salesman about this and he said Harley has addressed this in their '08 models and an aftermarket fix is no longer necessary. Is this true ? And if it's not, how big a concern is this wobble on Road Glides ? I need to make a decision in a hurry as I'm leaving for a long trip on the 29th. I'm not a rich man and I would hate to make a $20,000+ mistake, but that Road Glide really called to me. Any help on the above topics and concerns would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and I hope I get to see you on the road.
No wobble on mineup to100 MPH (fastest I've gone). I do get some buffeting at higher speeds when a cager is in front of me though.
Friend of mine has a BMW 1200LT and loves it but still longs for his Road Glide (converted to a Tour Glide) he sold. He took mine for a spin and went straight to the dealer afterwards. Don't get me wrong, he loves the beemer for 1 up long distance riding and it's smooth power too but he also has a 2006 SE Ultra and between the two he's ready to trade in the BMW. He also prefers the H-D for 2 up riding since his wife finds the H-D much more comfortable than the Beemer.
No wobble on my 07 EGlide and I have had it up to 100 MPH. The buffting around other vehicles can be rough on occassion but then I hear the Road Glide is much better due to the fixed fairing, I have the batwing....
I had NO WOBBLE and have had my RG a bit over 100 a time or two...
'08 seem to have the same HEAT PROBLEM as the '07's from what I've picked up on these threads but that can be corrected with minor adjustment like performing the Stage 1 for starters
Buffet of the helmet... Never owned any bike that you wouldn't get a little once in awhile as my Roady is better in the Wind then alot of fairing & windshield equipt bikes I have owned in the past...
Seat... Well as I tell everyone "THERE ISN'T A SEAT MADE THAT IS RIGHT FOR EVERYONE"
I think the Road Glide is the best handling touring bike Harley makes...
I believe Harley made some changes to the swingarm that is supposed to help with the wobble. Why don't you rent one for a day to see if you really like it?
I own a rk custom. With the windsheild on, and no helmet, I got no buffeting up to 100mph. With the windsheild off, the wind does push you back. I have not been one that normally wears a helmet. But, today my daughter followed me out to the garage, as I was getting ready to leave for work. She told me, "Wear your helmet, or I'm telling mom." Now, the wife knows I seldom wear a helmet, but when your daughter tells you to wear one, you put it on and shut up. LOL I rented a lot of bikes before I bought mine, and I recommend you do the same. Any issues you may have read about heat, buffeting, wobble, can all be answered by you riding one. This really isn't something you can ask someones opinion about. On this forum, there are some that hate the heat issue, and other claim it is not bad, so only you can make the decision if it is something that will bother you. IMHO
