I thought the fuel light on my 07 FLHR came on with a gallon left, I was wrong. Iran out of gas a couple of weeks ago on my way homve from workafter 10 miles at the most. From now on whenever I see that light go on I am pulling over for gas at the first gas station I see.
My 07 Ultra Classic fuel light come on right around a 1/4 tank. I have gone right to the gas station and filled up. I have found out that the light comes on at the 4 gallon mark. I have gone up to 30 mile more with the light on. As the others have said I look to see at what milage it came on at and add 25 - 30 miles to it before I really start looking. I have taken it down to 4.8 gallon usage.
Use the odometer not the light. It might take a few trips to figure out what the magic number is, but the light doesn't mean crap. Varies too much from bike to bike.
I am with Ianchris1, I always use the odometer, the trip odometer is so easy to set and I never have to worry if the light is working properly.
I don't trust my light at all. I use my first trip odometer to track my fuel mileage. I try to fill up around the 150 mark. Haven't push to find out the max and not going to.
I use the second trip odometer to track the mileage on my oil. I reset it everytime I get an oil change. Piece of mind for me.
