Ok, so I've found the cause of the clunk in my front end when I brake. There is this thin aluminum piece of metal under the bearing nut that...even with the nut tight as all hell...lets the whole thing slide around a bit. This aluminum piece just has some tabs on it and (as far as i know) is only used to clip wiring harnesses and Deutch connectors to.
Here's the aluminum piece I removed.
And here's the bearing nut I removed it from underneath. Then put the nut back on and tightened it. NO MORE NOISE!!!
I hope this helps someone (or many people) fix that damn noise!
Isn't that aluminum piece you removed supposed to have the tabs bend up around that large nut to keep it from loosening?
All three of my harleys have the same thud, noise, when the bump is agressive
enough. I always assumed head bearing, we know assumed!!!!
My 93, FXSTC, 97 FLHRI and 08 FLHRC same noise, just one of many..
If I had a radio I would have turned it up.......LOL............Tenn.Vol.
