Default Heat Shield Install

I’ve got an ’08 RKC – absolutely love it, but there’s one thing bugging me. There is a 3 inch or so gap in the exhaust heat shield right next to my right footboard. I’ve had the bike less than a month, but the visible exhaust pipe in the gap is already turning brown. I got a replacement heat shield that covers the gap at the dealer, and I’m going to put it on tonight. Install looks like a total no-brainer, but I’ve been surprised before – are there any tricks to installing these that I should be aware of?

THX

Steve

H-D sells a heat shield that replaces the original that covers that gap. Kuryaken makes one that just covers the gap. I used the H-D one on my Ultra and its two hose clamps that you move from the old one to the new one. It took about 15 minutes and its a bit easier if you use a 1/4 inch drive socket or a nut driver instead of a screwdriver. I think its 5/16 but don't hold me to that.

I have no idea how the one that just covers the gap installs.

I tried the Kury one called "Bridge the Gap", It almost does the trick but still leaves some uncovered pipe which looks like crap. I have ordered the full shield from HD. It is stock on the SE Ultra.
