I have an 08 and the heat is no problem. Hotter than a liquid cooled bike but you would expect that

Gunrunner:

Your're one of two people on this thread that have suggested the stock '08's are cooler than the stock '07's. Any idea how H-D accomplished that?

thatguy - I went back and looked at the box the SERT came in. Besides my name and VIN, there were two other numbers:
200TL001 and another that says RO#27577. I don't know if one of those is what you are looking for.

I own an 07 and have test ridden several 08s but don't own one. I did notice the same issues with heat on the 08s as the 07s. Most of the time the heat is no problem. It is when you are waiting in stop-and-go traffic for a while and the outside temps are pretty high that it is most noticeable. Or if you are wearing thinner than denim or leather pants. The heat coming through the crossover pipe on the exhaust from the rear jug is the problem. Some people have moved the heat away from the thighs by switching to true duels, others have gone with Air/Fuel management components that allow them to richen the fuel mixture.Others add heat shields which helps some.

Nightrider.com has a solution that looks interesting which requires the installation of new wide band O2 sensors and fuel management that makes sense. I think that this solutiondoes not comply with EPA regs and I don't know what the consequences of that are but I am trying to learn what I can about it. From what I understand, the dealer upgrades that are available will not help the heat issues because the EPA requires they stick with the 14.7:1 A/F mixture which is the source of the problem. Anything HD or the dealer does to change this will bring "heat" and probably finesfrom the EPA.

My wife has never complained about heat on my '08 Ultra. The only times I feel anything is if I'm riding with the vents on the lowers closed. Then I can feel a little heat on my right leg. Otherwise...nothing. If I have to sit through multiple street light cycles before clearing the intersection it gets a little warm. But is really is no real bother. It certainly won't cause me to spend a bunch of money on upgrades because of it.

All that written, I'd say, no, I have no heat issues with my Ultra.

Yeah, got an 08 RK Classic...

it does get a bit hot, especially on warm days at lower speed. got about 2000 miles on it. Just got back today from a six hour trip. Wife tells me that last time she noticed it getting pretty hot on the right side. This time on both sides.

BTW, someone above said they did not understand how putting more air into the AF ratio would cool the engine. I don't think the Stage 1 upgrades are putting more air, they should be enriching the mixture, more FUEL, and that would cool the engine. I plan on doing the stage 1 as soon as $$$$ allows, runs about $2200 locally for pipes/mufflers, power commander and software. Not sure if the new download is even available yet for 08's.

Hey, quick dumb question... what do you guys [gals] consider 'lugging' the motor, I mean at what general RPM do you shift???

With the six speed- it seems about right to shift into 6th at about 65 mph, but the RPM is pretty low. Normally, when in no particular hurry, I run the bike very easy, and shift around 2000-2500 RPM.

The dealer tech installed a tach and set the shift light at 4000 RPM.

What say you???[8D]
