I have the same issue. It takes a long time to idle down when cold and on occation
it idlesitself up quite a bit. I was going to take mine in and see if it has anything to do
with the throttle postioning sensor. It was my only guess.
first things first.
check the head temp sensor connection clean and tight.
Pull any trouble codes
clean and tighten the battery cables at both ends.
could be something else too. But start with these basics first.
Also check the idle air control motor.
Also realize if the outside air temp where you're at has been cooler than normal lately then it's a normal happening.
Had the same problem on my 98 fuel injected Road King not long ago. High idling took forever to drop down and some random idle spikiing. After posting on the forum and speaking to a few local mechanics I replaced the engine temperature sensor, then re adjusted the high and low idle settings . Problem solved. My guess is this is your problem. Easy to fix yourself if you have a manual. Only thing is the sensor cost $100 and is not returnable. You might want to give it a try .
As I understand it, this is a somewhat common issue with theMagneti-Marelli FI bikes. I've never had it happen (knock on wood) on my 01 RKC but have been told by more than one person that it is common.
Any chance you have been using the star wheel under the throttle as a "Crusie Control" and have not loosened it up to the point that the idle settles back down?
