It's a highly traveled road I was on...and I always ride withthe speed of traffic. Besides, him racing past me was even more pointless seeing as how there was a car in front of me doing 55mph. That's when they became even more foolish riding the dotted line to get past people. I ride in what lane I feel safest in, left lane on that particular road. Lots ofcars in the right lane turning on and off the road...
agree with you. less merging traffic if you're in the left lane

Don't go slamming the guy even if he was doing 55 in the left lane. One uncourteous pass on the thread starter would have sent that message. But to continue with that riding style especially all 3 of them just means they were on an ******* mission so it wouldn't have mattered if he was doing 70. Alot of riders on big stable tourers like oursforget just how rucked up you can get going down especially at freeway speeds. Ummm Yeah you can actually fall off of two wheels. Imagine that.

Exactly, no one should be flaming this guy because he was doing something you perceive to be wrong. It irritates me when I come up to someone riding in the left lane at only 5 mph over if I'm in a hurry, but if I want to pass him I go ALL THE WAY into the RIGHT LANE to pass him.

That's dangerous enough as it is, let alone passing someone within their own lane.

And passing a car to the right in the right lane? That's just plain stupid. As far as I'm concerned they better hope alcohol was involved because ifthat'snot their excuseit means they are seriously mentallyretarded while riding a bike and they'll eventually meet up with Death and he'll have somethin for 'em.

My question to the group is how do you properly pass a whole string of bikes who are poking along and not ever looking in the mirror at what is behind them. Having riden in Spain, Italy, etc , you do not hang out in the left lane. I had this experience on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and it was very frustrating to follow this group forever. Any pointers would be appreciated.

you would pass them the same way you would if there were a string of cars in front of you that you wanted to pass. more than likely, not. so instead of getting frustrated, slow down and enjoy the ride. if you can't do that, then pull over at a convenient spot, have a cool drink (soda of course), then after you've given them sufficient time to get down the road, continue your ride.

I agree with the original poster... You dont pass someone you don't know on a bike in their own lane unless perhaps they've "waved" you through to go on by.

If I see a pack or a single bike coming up behind me that's obviously moving faster than me I move to the right lane and let them by. I try to watch for these things and see it coming but sometimes if focused on something ahead I'll not see them coming up behind. Still, I let them by whenever I can or if it's a single lane road and it's a group trying to stay together I've moved to the far right edge of the lane if safe and waved them on by me - this gets a wave of acknowledgement and then they go on by one at a time.

If your blocking me I will pass you. If cars are side by side blocking me I will pass them too. I have been doing it for over 38 years and never had an accident. You should have got out of their way, or moved to the side of the lane and waved them ongeezer (and yes I am a geezer too).

Wow, this reminds of when my (grown) sister went out at 1:00 a.m. to get cigarettes at a convenience store. As she is making her purchase these guys come in force a gun to her head and rob the store. The first words out of my mom's mouth is "what were you doing out at 1:00 a.m."...

Sounds to me like the guy was going faster than the speed limit probably with the flow of traffic in the left lane and probably passing away people in the right lane. Can't see where he was breaking the law or not being curtious to other drivers since it appears that nobody was directly behind him when this occurred.
Sorry I have to agree with your Mom on this one.

Most of the highways around here are 2 lane (one each direction).
Interstate is the exception.
But in the case where there are 2 lanes each way, I ride in the lane appropriate at that time.
Colorado has most multi lanes marked as left for passing only.
I see lots of cagers ignoring that rule.
But lots of "greenies" (coloradoans) exceed posted speed limit and are constantly passing anyway. So it's a moot point.
Sometimes in some areas it is much safer to ride left lane as to the numerous congested on and off ramps in the right lane.
But I always keep a close watch in my mirrors for traffic coming up behind.
when an opportunity presents itself for me to move right ,I do so, let traffic pass, and then move back left if I feel it is best to do so.
In more open areas and if I am running late and I feel a need/ desire to go above speed limit, I try to ride as far right as possible, and get behind another car that is doing above speed limit.
Makes it harder for the radar to pick me out of the traffic flow.
But I find as I get older even if I'm late, I'm just not in a hurry to get there anyway.
As to another bike passing you in your lane without your ok to do so is plain rude and unsafe.
Couple years ago a biker did that to me just as we crested a hill and less than 1/4 mile away was a sharp curve.
Well he didn't make the curve and he didn't live either. died 4 days later.
He caused me to run off the road, but I was able to get bike slowed down and then me and my passenger walked away with a bruised shoulder on both of us after Bike fell down.

Where is the accountability for the person doing the crime? It is a shame that when someone breaks the law we blame the victim.
