I have searched through all of the posts I could find on this issue and have had no luck on finding an answer to my question. My 07 Ultra developed a slight ping under load around the 2500 mile mark and since then it has continued to get progressively worse no matter what brand of 93 octane gas I use. I have spoken to my service guy and even after taking my bike for a test ride he couldn't tell me anything more than to use higher octane fuel which I already knew.
My problem is this as mentioned in other posts, once the pinging starts, performance drops dramatically not to mention the fact that I know what improper combustion can do to an engine.
Today on my way back from the 5k service the pinging started as I was going up a small incline on the interstate and then the check engine light came on.
I pulled over, got the code, called the service dept, was told that the rear cylinder O2 sensor showed rich, and then was told to clear the code and drive the bike on home to see if it did it again. damnit man!
Well, I did and no more codes but a hell of a lot more pinging all the way home everytime the engine came under any type of a load up a hill especially.
BTW it still has the stock a/c and se slipons
Is this common to the tc96?
Is there a fix from the dealership or should I be prepared to explain to the wife why I need another big $$$ upgrade to this 1st class machine I told her about!!!
Sorry for the rant!
you need a hi flow filter and race tuner to cure the problem correctly. Yes more money or put your stock exhaust back on assuming the bike was never dynoed.
Finish the STAGE 1 - You'll improve the performance and get rid of your ping...
Air Kit (Highly recommend Ness Big Sucker)
And a FUEL MANAGEMENT system.... If the Dealer does a download it will still be set to a lean condition...
If your not planning on doing a bunch of Engine Mods... Then V&H FuelPak will work well for you - Very user friendly - doesn't kill your pocket book - and it WORKS!!!
I knew that was the answer it's just a shame to throw 20 grand at something as a starting point! I really have enjoyed the bike as is I've had it less than two months and already have 5500 miles on it. Now it seems that the more miles the more problems I am going to encounter which really takes the high from the ride!
It takes me back to the days when you saw a bike with more than 10k miles and said wow that things worn out!
I was considering going to a 110 eventually butevertime I turn around what money I save for the conversion gets spent on one more fix for one more "common" problem. Not to mention that also on my way home my speedo started doing the death dance which at least that might get fixed under warranty.

The problem is you didn't enjoy it "as is", you messed with it, you leaned out a already lean set up by putting free flowing mufflers on and didnt bother to do what it needs to make it run right . Have you had the HD 903 download done? This is harleys answer to ping, but long as you continue to run it in the very lean condition you will ping, or worse you might just burn up the motor. Put the stock pipes back on or finish the upgrade you started with at least a se air cleaner and stage 1 download. This will only cost you 325.00 or so and you will be amazed how much better it will run.
my cure was a dyno and backing off the timing in the 2500-3500rpmn range at 40% and up throttle. Voila no ping and bike just flies up hills! Even in 6th
Yes, put the stock mufflers back on. The stock bike shouldn't ping. If it does, the dealer should have to either fix it under warranty now or fix it when the engine goes.
