Sound system
Funny you should ask. I asked the same question about doing it on my rk custom. Here is my thread. https://www.hdforums.com/m_2278517/m...tm.htm#2299573
This is going to be my winter project. Let me tell you what I have planned. You will need to get an amplifier. Most say a decent 400 watt amp will work best. A 2 channel will do, unless you ever plan to mount more than two speakers, then get a four channel. You will need a set of 6x9 (I suppose you can go with smaller ones, depends on you). I am looking at water proof ones. You will also need a RCA jack to plug a mp3 player into the amp. You will also need a Noise Suppressor/ground loop isolator to avoid getting a hum in the speakers. Also, you might want to set it up for quick disconnect, for when you need to remove the bags. Also, I found this thing that seems like it would mount to your bars to control the sound level. http://www.mhinstruments.com/products/crankcase.htmI don't know how well, or even if it would work. And, it isn't cheap. Looking around ebay, you can get everything elseyou need for way under a hundred bucks. The quality of parts may not be great, but if you like the way it works, you could always add the good stuff later. On ebay, look for motorcycle amp's.
My plan was to cut a large hole in the back of the bags (facing the rear wheel). And have the front of the speaker sticking out some (to save some space in the bags) Someone sent me a pic of his set up (I can't find it). What he did was to drill a lot of small holes (like a speaker grill), and mount the entire speaker in the bag. It looked awesome, and I plan on doing the same thing. You will loose some storage, but for tunes, I am willing to loose some space. look into getting a small amp, and check the dimensions on the speakers. Also, in the current copy of Baggers, their is a king in it with the speakers facing toward the front of the bike. I asked about this, but the consensus is that facing the rear wheel sounds better. Plus, I have leather bags, and would rather cut just the plastic, as apposed to leather and plastic. Also, if I decide to remove it, I can just put a plate over the holes it the plastic, and no one would even know the difference, IMO. Hope this has helped you some. The info these guys gave me certainly helped with my decision.
