This May I bought my first Harley an 07 Ultra. 5200miles so far. A couple of questions.
Its very hot, all most unrideable in heavy traffic. What should I do?
I was thinking of slipons with some kind of fuel management system and an aircleaner. What combinations are working the best?
Can I install this stuff myself or do I need to hook it to a computer or a dyno?
Where's the best place to buy the above stuff?
Do the heat shields that get installed near your thigh work?
Someone recomended to me to have the dealer change the computer to shut down the rear jug when it gets hot?
Any information would be great. Thanks
Your question is the #1 question here on this forum. What you want to do to your bike is what everyone here does. I call it the "harley tax." You pay it so your bike will run how it should from the factory. The reason it doesn't is becuase HD is hampered by the EPA rules. They have the bike set up very lean in order to pass EPA. This makes the bike run hot. What we all do is 3 things. 1. Add free breathing air cleaner 2. Add free flowing pipes 3. Increase the fuel flow with some type of fuel management system.
I shopped on Ebay and bought most of my parts from Ebay stores. There are also several sponsors here that have good prices. Your bill to do all this can vary from a few hundred to well of 1K. It all depends on you taste and your budget. I myself have spent just under 1K. You can look at my sig to see what parts I used.

Yep, welcome to the world of 100 year old air cooled engine technology struggling to exist in a modern era. Everything said above is bang on. I spent around$900 on exhaust, intake and fuel management (PCIII in my case). Still runs a bit hot and it's probably still too lean. Once I get back from Iraq I'm going to fiddle with it some.
I miss the old days sometimes...of course my '06 RKC doesn't leak, starts when I want it to (I don't have Ironhead knee), hasn't had any electrical problems or sudden catastrophic engine failures to speak of. So I guess I'll put up with a little heat.
Don't forget you have a, now, 96 cubic inch motor between your legs. You will experience heat. Yes the new emissions have caused the engines to run leaner, causing more heat issues. Can't help you with theheat shieldoption other than what I read in other threads, but after I installed the Stage 1 with better breathing SE air cleaner, free flowing SE touring mufflers and SERT fuel management system, the engine runs richer and cooler than stock. I am pleased with my results. There are many options you can go with and many here have similar results with aftermarket Stage 1 accessories.Products you can eveninstall yourself. I chose to have the dealer install mine as I had the bike dyno tested afterward. Try searching this topic from the past threads to read others input. It can become confusing choosing what components to add on. Educate yourself on all your options, including exhaust sounds before making your purchase.
