Default Exhaust - please put up with 1 more thread

I know this subject has been talked to death on this forum and on the section dedicated to exhaust, but the more I read the less sure I am on what I want. I have an 08 Ultra, I know that I am going to do a stage-1, I know that I'm going to do the SERT and have it dyno tuned, but I can't seem to settle on a set of slip-on pipes. I thought I had...with the Vance and Hines Ovals, but some say they are too quiet, at the same time others say they are too loud. On my 02 Dyna I gutted the stock mufflers and came out with a really nice rumble. I'm looking for something like that sound for my Ultra. Not so loud that I'll be setting off car alarms and rattling windows in the neighborhood, but they need to be considerably louder than the stock pipes that are on my Ultra. I don't want to do true duals and don't want 2 into 1. Has anyone seen some kind of chart or rating that would show slip-ons in a quietest to loudest type review? The Vance and Hines Ovals are rather expensive and the last thing I want to do is spend that much and not like what I end up with.

Sorry for beating this subject to death, but it seems like opinion vary so widely on what the extremes are, and which pipes fill in the that middle area where I want my Ultra to be.

Dude get out and listen to other Bikes and find out what you like the best. Hell I've had three different sets on my RK, before I found what I liked. The best thing to do is go to a Bike night and listen to the Bikes pulling in and find out what pipes they are running.

I agree form your own opinion by hearing the different ones at idle and as they drive off, its the only true way.

Rush makes mufflers with interchageable baffles.

One of the bagger mags had a pretty extensive test of slip on mufflers. I think it was one of the first couple of issues of American Bagger. They had dB ratings on all the ones tested. Unfortunately, you can't go just of a dB rating. You really have to listen to them.

This is exactly what my bike sounds like. I have the same V&H ovals and I really like the sound and look.

SOUND IS A "ME THING"

Get your ears to work for you unless you like spending a bunch of $$$$$ changing exhaust slip-ons\systems till you FIND THE ONE THAT FITS "YOUR NEEDS"

The reason you're confused is because this forum is not a very good place to judge something that is purely subjective.

Three factors in exhaust (all up to you):
1. Looks
2. Sound
3. Performance

It's like SoCal_Pappy says: Though some of you rich dudes can afford to experiment, us poor folk have to spend 6 months going from rally to rally listening and looking. I got the V&H fishtails primarily for looks but also sound. The performance factor to me is reserved for those guys who are obsessed with the dyno numbers. If this thing can carry my wife and I on a trip well enough (and it does) and it runs well, then I'm not too worried about performance.

Take your time and make a decision once or spend a lot of money. It's all up to you, bro.
