Wife and I went for a ride last Friday to try get some miles on the new 08 Ultra. Decided on a 130 mile loop into Colorado, then east, then north back into Wyoming and west home to Cheyenne. Made it half way, but when we hit the Wyoming boarder coming back north the wind really started howling. Had everything I could do to hold the bike on the road and still some gusts had us moving sideways....met 2 semi's that nearly blew us off the road. Finally got to the north end of the loop and started heading west straight into the wind. Was actually a little better going into it, but the gusts still were blowing us around. Took a half tank of gas to go the 30 miles into the wind back to town.....and earlier in the week I checked mileage....was getting 47 mpg. Got home and said a little prayer before getting off the bike in the garage....."thank you lord for getting us home safe". Found out later we were likely riding in 50mph winds with gusts closer to 80. I was thankful we were on the Ultra because I don't think I could have kept my Dyna on the road. Made me pay a litte more attention to those "high wind" warnings from the weather channel.
Glad you made it back OK! Winds were terrible Friday! I was riding on I-80 in those as well from Wamsutter to Salt Lake. They definately increased the pucker factor! I had the windshield on the RK, but it was tough going.
Got home and said a little prayer before getting off the bike in the garage...
I know how you feel. After every road trip I want to hug my RK for getting me there and back safely, regardless of the weather.. Glad you made it back okay, sounds like a heck of an experience.
Sounds Scary man I'm glad you and the wife made it home. I got hit with
some big gust already that scared the H out of me. But it sounds like you guys had miles of it.
I also got hit with some real bad cross winds on bridges already. The kind of crosswind that your
leaned into it and counter steering the whole way across the bridge. Take care and hold on!
Did the same thing on I-80 thru PA on Saturday. Man, that wasn't a ride, that was a workout.
Followed a river up through central pa, which was not only windy, but friggin' cold too!
Scary stuff dude, plus the added thrill of driving into the sun and having wildlife on the side of the road.....[:@]
The Big Guy was definetly with my wife andme on that trip. We were really happy to reach our destination that afternoon.
Yep, it was a struggle on the return trip from Northern lower Michigan on Sunday. I believe the winds were 30 to 40 mph. Can't imagine 50 with 80 mph gusts.Damn wind ruined the ride.
We went riding Saturday night just on a short little jaunt down some back roads and the cross winds were'nt too bad. When we turned on the interstate to head back, it was a fight just to keep 60 mph, then when we turned across it, WOW, I don't mind changing lanes, I just prefer to decide when to do it myself!
Glad you made it back safe okay.
Well, here in San Diego, we have the 50-80 MPH winds, and fire, too.
Yesterday, the Rice Canyon fire forced me to take a big detour leaving work, on my way home, which is just north of the Witch fire. I was on my Sporty, and when I finally got to the I-15, the wind was so bad, I had to put my feet on the passenger pegs, and lay down over the gas tank, hunkered down behind the windshield. And there's lots of downed tree branches, palm, fronds, and all sorts of stuff, plus the smoke and ash flying around.
I stayed home today.
Still, I laugh at your wind story. My story has FIRE!
Seriously, though, high winds like that are scary.
