All I want is a washable filter element. I just thought I'd question performance gains
As has been mentioned already, the flow dynamics of the stock airbox itself will be the real limiting factor. You many net a performance gain but it'll not be night-and-day difference. Probably more like noon-and-twelve-fifteen (a guess). I'm thinking that any flow increase under those circumstances will be ably accommodated by the stock ECU since the dynamics won't change, just the rate (if at all). By changing out the airbox assembly itself you get not only a larger filter area, but a much free-breathing situation with entirely different dynamics and this is something that should not be done without retuning in some fashion. What is the stock filter replacement part number, something like HD-400?
Thanks to all for the feedback. All I want is a washable filter element. Ijustthought I'd question performance gains, as this might be a side benefit of a K&N.
If you are going to pay $50 for the replacement K&N and decide to upgrade later, you will have to redo the whole thing. I don't think the replacement filter works with the kits mentioned here. Better to keep options open and spend less overall.
Their site FAQ answers regarding increased air flow and necessary engine management changes all seem to assume presence of a Mass Air Flow measurement capability, which we don't have.
I still think the stock airbox will be the limiting factor and that any meaningful performance improvements will be that it won't degrade so quickly over time as the filter becomes dirty (less quickly than the stock paper).
Ihave no interest in performance mods. I shot the load (and budget) on my previous Harley. With a kid in college, I promised the wife I'd leave my '05 stock, which I have. When I want to gofast I ride mysport tourer.Again, I like the K&N because it's washable.
K&N'scan be problematic. There are numerous posts on corvetteforum.com about filteroilcoatingMAF sensors anddegrading performance. I cleanthe MAF in my '86 Vette withspray cleaner to remove filter oil. (The problem is not from over-oiling.)

K&N Cleaner & Degreaser[center][font="arial, helvetica, sans-serif"]K&N Air Filter Cleaner is the only cleaner formulated to clean K&N Filtercharger elements. The use of any other cleaning solution can void the filter's warranty, and quite possibly could damage the cotton material.
