With the exception of HD touring pipes, my 2005 Electra Glide is completely stock. This includesair cleaner assembly. Would there be any change in performance if I replaced thestockpaper air filter with a K&N?I realize I can install a Power Commander or similar device to complete the stage one and optimize airflow, but that's not my goal. Thanks for your help.
Do It .. Ive done this since 1987 with all my HD 's .. K+N A/f . wortks great clean able... no other mods.. never any problems. tons of miles. I ride avg 13000 per year
If you plan on changing over to a K&N filter you'll be increasing the air flow to the engine... It would be HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you complete the STAGE 1 then by adding a fuel management system as you'll be running on the leaner side by doing the K&N replacement. You should notice a performance increase with the complete STAGE 1

If you only replace the sock element with a KN you need not do any retune, It will flow very slightly better than stock but it can be cleaned and re-used. I think this is what you were asking instead of changing out the whole air cleaner assembly with a screaming eagle set up. K&N makes a factory replacement element.
The filter, along with the pipes, will enable the engine to breath much better, That's the upside. The downside is that you will be allowing a lot more air to run thru the engine, resulting in an even leaner fuel ratio. If this is the only mod you are going to make to the motor, the Harley $149 download will reprogram the ECM perfectly, and the bike will run great. If further mods are planned, it pays to go with the SERT, as it is adjustable.
If you only replace the filter element you won't be getting much more air flow. The back plate/cover on the stock air cleaner only has one or two little openings to suck air through. The K&N filter element won't make much difference if you don't open up the air cleaner body by going with a stage-1 kit. If you look at the air cleaner on a bike with a Screamin Eagle stage-1 air cleaner, behind the football cover you will see that the entire back side is open so the engine can suck air from all around instead of just through a couple little holes. This is where you performance increase comes from. Although once you open up the intake you really need a better, free-flowing exhaust, and then of course fuel management. These 3 pieces work together to give you the best, least expensive performance boost, but can still cost $1,000 or more.
Thanks to all for the feedback. All I want is a washable filter element. Ijustthought I'd question performance gains, as this might be a side benefit of a K&N.
