The new bikes with the 6 speed transmission has a bigger front sprocket on the primary. You need to streach the gears out a little more. Keeping the Rpm's above 2300rpm's so the motor don't git lugged. Don't wind the gears over about 4000 rpm's, and that is a little high but o.k.
Your dealer should have gone over this with you. The first 500 miles, use lower gears, don't strain engine. No cruise control, vary speeds keep RPMs below 4,000. After 500 till 1000 miles they don't want you to strain the engine, but you can get on it. This is all warranty stuff.
Windup quotes what Lamborgini and most engine makers say. The first 1000 isn't much to stay within warranty in my humble opinion. [/align]

2nd this, but don't let yer rpm's git under 2200 while riding in a gear.
The manual for my 08Touring Modelssays the following;
1. first 50 miles keep it below 4000 rpm, no lugging
2. up to 500 miles vary engine speed, avoid operating at any steady engine speed for long periods. Engine speed up to 5000 rpm in any gear is permissible.
Page 137 in the owners manual has the break in proceedure.
Don't they have the RPMs cut back on the 08's to somewhere in the 5000 rpm range. I was told but I was so excited I forgot. I know it don't go to 6000 rpms.
Find a country road.... Get in 3rd @ 30mph, twist the throttle 100% (WFO) until you accellerate to 60mph, close the throttle (0%) and coast back down to 30mph. Repeat this process 10 times in a row and you're done!
The HD recommendations are geared more towards "breaking the rider in" than the bike. If you do not take advantage of the sharp edges on the freslly honed cylinders quickly, they rings might never seat fully & properly. The sharp edges work to "cut" the edges of the rings during the 100% throttle part, which presses the rings firmly against the cylinder walls.
Hey Phil...I Have about 200kms (125 miles) on my new bike. Should I do your break in proceedure with this mileage still? Id like to get it broken so I can use the cruise control onthe highway.
Cardboard...I let mine get over 5000 and there was no cut off but I do haveSERT.
