Been following this forum closely for several weeks as I began seriously planning the purchase of my first Harley. Wasn't interested in the touring models until a month ago when I test rode four different models from different families. Reluctantly, I tried out the Ultra Classic. Never should have gotten on that bike, that's all I can say! Suddenly, I couldn't look at anything else...
This past weekend, I rented an Ultra and put on almost 600 miles and about 14 hours of seat time. Now I'm screwed. Not only do I have to have an Ultra, but I have to have one now!! So now I see what a lot of you guys have been talking about on this forum... once you've been on, it's impossible to settle for anything less. What a great bike... and I can't believe how comfortable it was for all those miles and all those hours.
And thanks to you guys here, I already know most if not all of the options and things I want to have done to it when I take delivery... which wasn't going to be until February or March, but now I'm not sure I can wait that long!!
One question I have though... is that 5th gear whine gone in the 08's? That really got annoying at times on my '07 rental.
I've just finished putting a little over 1000 miles on my 08 Ultra, there is a little noise when I shift into 5th, but not enough that I consider it a bother. In fact I've gotten so I kind of like it, it lets me know what gear I'm in before seeing the number 6 light up. If I have the stereo on at all , or am just wearing a helmet I barely notice a noise, so maybe something is different with the 08s.
Never heard the whine and haven't met anyone who has the problem. Oh I believe it exists, but it's not every bike, there are a lot more that don't have it......than those that do.
I run the Redline heavy shock and mine, still whines in fifth but shifts like butter. Sounds like my old M22 in the 69 Z/28. I wish they all whined. Hell you should hear valves on my Ducati. It's a machine, RIDE IT and quit WHINING.

Welcome to the world of the Electra Glide -it's a truly classy and incredibly comfortable road machine. I've put 30,000 miles on mine since Christmas and cannot say anything bad about it at all. It's been 100% trouble free and a pure joy from Day One.
