Howdy. I'm an owner of a Skirtster Roadster but have rented a 07 Road Glide for a trip I'm taking tomorrow. This is my first time riding a Big Twin and would like advice on any peculerlarities(sic) of the Road Glide. How accurate is the gas gauge? Can the windshield be adjusted. The wind at highway speeds buffets the hell out of the top of my head. Should I even bother with the stereo system? Anything I should know about the cruise control? Any help is appreciated.
I don't have any buffeting, so I can't offer much help there, except it may be your helmet. Some seem to bounce around more than others.. try putting your feet up on hwy pegs or on the crash bar and see if that helps.
As for the guage, they aren't the best. Fill up at 150mi. The trip meters are easy enough to use, pick one of two, and hold the button down to reset. You can stretch a tank of gas to almost 200mi if you are keeping the speed down around 60 and easy on the throttle.
The cruise is sweet, turn on the dash switch, engage it on the right and go at it. It will not hold a speed higher than 85, and it will disengage when you hit either brake, accelerate hard, or the motor free-revs.
As for the radio, I can't live without it now.. You should be able to hear it fine on the hwy with a stock shield!
Gas gauges on most motorcycles are no where near right... If ya fill up every 160 miles orso you should be OK...
Windshield can not be adjusted - But the OEM shield should be fine and offers good wind protection and you should be able to hear your tunes while Cruizin'
Like Pappy said... the gauges are a bit misleading. you'll get close to 150 on the 1st half tank it you will it completely up, but will be seeing the light by 180miles. A stock rental bike shold be able to get close to 200 miles on a tank, but you'll be ready to stretch by 160~175.
Sadly, the stock bars kinda suck, but you'll love the ride!
I rented one a month ago in Colorado. Did a thousand miles in three days. Wish I could afford to trade my Fatboy in on a new Road Glide. Awesome motorcycle. Enjoy!
If your rental is a stock 08 you should easily get over 200 miles per tank. My 08 RG can get 240 at 45 MPG with a 6 gallon tank. However the guage is misleading, when it shows 1/2 tank I still have about 4 gallons. I believe the HD manual states you have one gallon remaining when the fuel light comes on. The ride is great. The wind on the helmet hits me too, I'm 5' 10", and now used to it. Removing my helmet visor helped a lot. The cruise and tunes will be great on a long trip; if you have an ipod to run thru the auxillary radio input it will be even better. She likes 2500 to 3000 RPM.
Have a great trip, wish I were fixing to take one.
