Cold weather riding suit
I have an Ultra that i generally ride to work most of the year. With gas getting above 3$ a gallon, I need to ride even more. Cold weather is approching and I need some info.
Leather is NOT warm...contrary to belief it is hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Years ago I had a one piece insulated snowmobile suit that was easy to get off/on. It had zippers on each outer leg that went the entire leg, not just from the knee down. Plus it had cuffs on the sleeves that helped keep cold air from getting in.
Now, i see some of the gold wingers wearing these types of suits, but i cannot find anything online that i am looking for. I must not be looking in the right place. Does anyone know of a one piece (coverall type) insulated riding suit that is available online and doesnt cost a fortune?
if you have the web site address that would be even better.
many thanks.
A Tourmaster Textile jacket - it's windproor/waterproof and has a removable insulated liner. Wear a layer or two under this and generally you're quite comfy in the 30's temps. If below 30 maybe a couple layers under it.
I wear a pair of cold weather riding jeans made by Icon. They're called "Barrier" jeans and have three layers - the outer denim itself, a wind-proof lining, then a warm soft flannel lining against your skin. Also there is an abrasion resistant panel in the knee area in the event you do some unplanned pavement surfing. These jeans are wonderful to say the least. They're high quality and full cut for comfort. If it's in the 30's I'll wear long-underwear under them and I've had no probs down to about 28 or so at freeways speeds.
Gloves? Tourmaster makes a pair of extreme cold weather gloves that have been great in these temps. They're a gauntlet style textile glove called "Polar Tex". Windproof/waterproof and comfy into the 20's.
A good pair of wool socks (or heated socks!).
Full face helmet with balaclava pullover under it needless to say.
Happy riding!
Since i am riding to work I cannot/do not have the time to put on 2-3 layers. I need to be able to put on my work clothes, then put on the riding suit, gloves, etc and go. Easy on, easy off. I already have long trip riding gear...layers of insulated clothes for an all day ride. I need the quick warmth and easy assemble. Hope this helps explain it better.
I can wear a t-shirt and jeans under it at 35 degrees and I'm still hot. Actually had to stop and unzip it because it was too warm.

I used to wear one when I first started riding many years ago, actually purchased it at a Motorcycle shop. Since then I have moved to separates (Textile Jacket/heated jacket liner/Textile overpants with Liner) that Ihave purchased over the years.Stayed really warm in the snowmobile suit though, and it wasnt that expensive.
Here's a few

I've been making the commute for 5 years and have evolved the items above. I have a closet full of leather coats, Kilamanjaroo Coats, rain suits, etc, etc. The Aerostich is expensive for a reason. It is WORTH it.
For the last two years my primary commuter bike has been a BMW RT. The Road King is ridden occasionally to work but used mostly for touring.
