I have an 05 FLHRI Road King with the Sundowner Seat. I want to add a back rest, but my handlebars do not come back far enough to use one. I want to replace the handlebars. Which handlebar should I change to?
Litteraly 90% of all people who own a road king change them. The Bars are terrible and are not good for long distance. The dealer I do my business with said that litteraly 9 out of 10 roadkings either get new bars before delivey or shortly after. The easiest route is to switch to either the Road king Tall bars that harley offers or put on a set of Heritage softail Bars. The are almost exactly the same. They are a direct bolt on and your wires and cables will reach with no modifications. I put the Heritage Bars on my 05 Road King and couldnt be happier. The MOCO must know by now that the R.K. Bars suck, not sure why they dont change them.
I had the dealer install the RK Reduced Reach bars on for me.....I like setting as far back as I can on the bike. These bars bring them 2" closer to you. Might be a good option.
There are a lot of handlebars to choose from. I would recommend going to the dealer near you and sit on couple of different bikes and see what you like.
The reduced reach bars for the R.K., are virtually the exact same bar as the heritage softail bar. At the dealer I bought mine from I was able to buy chrome heritage bars for the same price as a polished stainless set of reduced reach bars. Sorry I dont have the part #. Go to your dealer and sit ona heritage softail, im pretty sure you will like the bars.

Not sure this would be a true indicator, the softail has a different seating position than a touring bike which will affect how the hand position feels.
I just installed the Road King Custom Beach bars on my 05 Classic yesterday..... to me, ( 5'9"), they were the most comfortable. Had to change front brake lines ($96).
