I got pretty good installing ceramic tile in DIY projects around my house. So when I retired I decided to hire out as an independent installer. It is a whole different game when you are working on someone else's property for hire. Those above urging caution on this idea are on target.

When you work on computers like I do for a living you can always find someone to do your bike work for a trade off even stealers.

I do alot of stuff on my scoot all of my service I don't mind helping buddies or even them coming to my house using my tool and my jack but if I charged I would feel responsible for anything that happened.

whenever I can lend a hand to someone I do it. In return when I need help with anything I usually get it from the people I have helped in the past. It works both ways you give and receive and it has worked for me for many years, never an issue..The only issue is what kind of beer we are getting and who is buying..

You can learn alot from this site and others. I wouldn't take my bike to a Harley dealer unless it was absolutely necessary. There are alot of knowledgeable peeps on the boards that are more than willing to teach a thing or two. Learn by getting a tool in your hand, going slow and pay attention to what and how something is disassembled. There is nothing more fun than wrenching if done properly IMHO!

Better have some good liabilityinsurance and a good lawyer when you open up a side business. A buddy of mine lost his shirt with a part time garage when he lost a lawsuit of some repair work. And the problem was not caused by him. You could be liable for not only scooter, but personal injury as well.

Look....I work on bikes of all types for mostly friends, but a few people whoI've just known for a short time. I only take cash and no receipt is given. If the person rides off and puts his bike under a truck, right after I just did his 5K service (God forbid), and decides to turn scumbag on me.....all I have to say is he came over to use some of my tools, and so I could help him service his bike...and he never paid me anything.
In any case the people I deal with are far,....very far from "the public", and the chance of one of them flipping like that on me is slim to none. Just aint too many people like that in the circles I travel in, and the ones that are like that sure as **** aint getting any work done by me even at 5x the price.

I have no issue with helping someone - do it any time. But you draw a line when you charge for your services. And if you're willing to get up on a witness stand and perjure yourself, remember that you can usually figure that they're gonna find a way to show you're lying. It just ain't worth it. Now, if someone you've helped tosses you a coupla bucks for your time/tools, I don't think that's gonna be an issue. It's when you hold yourself out as a "for hire" wrench that yer on the slippery slope.
